Complete beginner here. Where do I even start?

I keep reading about vertical farming and I want to try it at home but I have no idea where to begin. I have a spare room about 3x3 metres. No gardening experience at all. What should I grow first and what equipment do I actually need? Trying not to spend a fortune on the first attempt.
