AppHarvest, AeroFarms, and the vertical farming crash. What happened?

Several high-profile vertical farming companies have gone bust or filed for bankruptcy in the last couple of years. AppHarvest, AeroFarms, Fifth Season. Does this mean the business model is fundamentally broken or were these companies just badly run? I am trying to raise investment for a small operation and investors keep bringing up these failures.
